I did a search in google on websites equiped with Atutor and came up with about 45. There are of course many more also ones that are not used in an intranet surrounding so they would not come up in a search machine.

Of the ones i found most were Thai based (about 25). If this is a representative search result that would mean that Atutor is very populair with Thai tutoring schools (many were language institutions) but it might just have been coincidence.
All of the sites i encountered (with the exception of Vegards one) used one of the default Atutor themes for their Atutor section often vastly different from their main website's look and feel. many used Atutor as a stand alone website (about 50%).

I've done a similar search last August. Got slightly larger figures, probably because I've searched more deeply for Ukrainian- and Russian-language installations.

No strange about Thai, they've been quite active at this forum. But I've also seen several Pakistani universities maintaining large installations. An anomaly, I'd say, but surely a pleasant one.

Nevertheless, I believe the most installations I've found were based in North America or Western Europe.

About the bundled themes being used – it means both that this aspect is not a priority for webmasters and that the default one is of a sufficiently good quality.
As Dries Buytaert, the Drupal's author, says in his "state of Drupal" speech ( buytaert.net/state-of-drupal-presentation-september-2007 ), 3/4 of the Drupal installations are simply "ugly".
I think, those words could be easily extrapolated to ATutor and, indeed, any other product.

and I searched for:

"For guidance on using ATutor see the official ATutor Handbook."

..which is (should be) a term in the footer of all installations. if you searched for URLs including "atutor" you should note that you don't have to install Atutor in this directory.

regarding the theme, there are probably several reasons, the most importaint one is the fact that most people stick to the default theme, a different reason is that the redux theme was published only a few months ago, while the others have been there from the start.

You know how reluctant people are when it comes to changing the habits. smile Look-and-feel is among them.

I've searched for a string from ATutor's help. Doing that, you'll find that there are sites that replace all traces of "ATutor" string with some other name and work that way. Few of them really contain something added at the publicly available pages, but others merely have CSS readjusted.
Naturally, an URL search won't help much in that case.
The minus of this method is that you've got to make a search for each language.
