| Hi, has anyone developed a method for dealing with part-time students? For instance - one a one-year full-time course, we also have part-time students who do the course over 2 years. We would like to restrict which units of the course the part-time students see in the first year, but still allow them use of the same forums etc that the full-time students have, without duplicating the course - is there a best way, or is it possible to have a plugin module that can add extra granularity to access permissions to a group and achieve this? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. If a custom module is a possibility, we would be interested. Posted: 2009-03-18 07:38:35 | ||

| There isn't currently a way to distinguish between full and part time students. You could copy the course, limit access to content in the copy, and create a shared forum between the two courses. See the admin handbook for details on shared forums. Posted: 2009-03-18 08:30:30 | ||

| what we do is copy the course (manage -> create / restore backup), and as Greg say you can share the forums. it's a solution that gives us a lot of extra work, though. I believe a better solution to this (and many other problems related to several instances of the same course, and other functionality) would be to rewrite and rethink the group functionality (and maybe permissions) in ATutor. one of Drupals definately best and most flexible features are how you can fine tune the "permissions" to the "roles", and I believe ATutor could learn (and gain) a lot by looking at this. for example, this problem with full and part time students could be solved by allowing to set a different release date for content for different groups. also, an unrelated example, a group should not be gived the tool "forum", which is one forum in a course named after the group name, but all forums should have the possibility to set different access permissions for different groups. and, students must be able to be in more that one group at a time. and, "group type" should be made optional (or removed). and, and..! ..sorry, I've just been giving this quite a lot of thought over the years, and one day we will sit down and look into all the complexity of this, and probably set out to change it too Posted: 2009-03-18 09:12:50 | ||
