I have a number of financial managment tests that, not suprisingly, require use of the '' symbol.

Mindful of the fact that ATutor is XHTML, I carefully used the appropriate HTML character - £ The problem occurs when this is placed within brackets in which case (£wink is auto-translated to '' followed by wink .

Interesting but not quite the effect that I was aiming for. For the time being, I've sidestepped the problem by simply using the character directly but, in theory, this does impair the overall XHTML validity of any page such a symbol occurs on. Presumably the same would occur with any HTML character such as © etc.

In all fairness, I'm not sure that this is a specific 1.4.2 bug or occurred in earlier versions but I only noticed it today after completing an upgrade from 1.4 to 1.4.2.

Well, we started out with about 20 smilies and we're now down to five. Soon to be four. The semi colon right paren translates into a wink smilie. You can comment out the offending smilie code in include/lib/output.inc.php
