| Calliing all English to Japanese translators! Please proof read my Japanese translation, and help me complete it. (I am not sure how to download a part translation yet, since it seems to be possible to download only completed ones, or a list of the language yet to be translated. ) I have translated about half of Atutor in Japanese. I am not a Japanese national but I am a Japanese resident, and for example, read the Asahi Newspaper in Japanese most mornings. This means that there will be some mistakes, and that at times the Japanese will be a little stilted but generally understandable. I have also made notes as I go along about the difficulties. | Tim - We would be willing to assist in the proofing of your translation, provided that the timeframe meets our requirements. As mentioned in another post today, we are looking to deploy ATutor for several projects in Asia and require Japanese. | Dear William C I am not planning to continue with the translation at the present time. As I mentioned in my post, while I had done "50%" of the translation prior to the arrival of Acollab, in fact I had done less than that since I had translated the language on the GUI and not the longer help messages. The 50% refered to the number of *items* and not words I had translated. You might consider (this is not what I did and Greg may not approve but...as a temporary measure not for general consumption) putting the English through an automatic translation machine and then having your proof reader proof read that. I find that there are likely to be some misleading translations but the vast majority are after proof reading, not so bad. Please also note that there are two (or perhaps one) other translators signed up on the Japanese translators list. Is "admin" a translator or Greg? Tim Posted: 2004-06-30 21:56:31 | ||

| I have translated just a several pages into Japanese on ATutor 1.5. How can I upload this (a little added) atutor_1_5_ja.zip to ATutor.ca? Now it is at t-kita.net/tmp/atutor_1_5_ja.zip . BTW, During installation of ATutor, I noticed an installtion problem. You have one-byte character like '>>' in the 'Next' button value, but my Mozilla (and maybe also some others) mistakenly sees it is a 2-byte character joining it to the next '"' (quotation mark). That results in failure of 'Next' button submission to the installation process. I could not go further than step3. ( I just omitted '>>' character to proceed and completed the installation. ) Plese consider one of the following modification to the files in /install/include/ - Just omit the '>>' character - Put a space between '>>' and '"' like value="Next >> " ( so it is already OK for step7.php for example ) - Use entity expression like >> instead of ">>" This problem can be potentially weaken the spreading rate of ATutor in multi-byte countries, I suspect. | Dear Tim, Yes, I first change d the browser encoding manually, but in vain. Umm, so it is possibly the problem in PHP multi-byte character handling, I guess. (my PHP setting seems just a common one, though) Anyway, I do hope one of the options I proposed will be taken. # Maybe the second option is quit easy; step7.php or other files are already so. | Hello Kita Thanks for pointing out the problem in step3 of the install. These characters seem to be a problem in other places as well, depending on the character set being used. We'll likely replace them with something else. Regarding uploading the language yourself, you can't. That is an atutor.ca administrator function. When the translation is complete, you can attach it to a forum thread, or send it to us directly and we'll import it for you. The other option is to translate directly into our language database through the translation tools on atutor.ca. I did try to import the partial pack you linked above, but recieved an invalid zip file error. The pack is smaller than the original so there's something wrong. What system are you running ATutor on? What character set are you using in your browser? Which browser and version number? Which version of PHP are you using Which webserver? Posted: 2005-07-21 08:45:05 | ||

| Dear greg, Thank you for your consideration of the character problem. I just noticed the zip problem, and I tried to create a file by some quick hack, and I replace the zip file with valid one. Please check it again. I do not know why, but maybe browser fails to download the complete file.... Here are my answers : > What system are you running ATutor on? Vine Linux 3.1 (quite common in Japan) > What character set are you using in your browser? EUC-jp > Which browser and version number? Mozilla 1.7.8 > Which version of PHP are you using 4.3.11 > Which webserver? Apache-1.3.3 I will try a diffrent browser.

| I imported your additions and tried the partial language pack on a local system. Everything seems to be fine. No character handling problems that I could see. It could very well be a mozilla problem. I can't get Japanese to display at all with mozilla on Linux (I know I need to install the Japanese charset for mozilla), but on Windows XP with IE6, everything works as it should. | Hello, As for the corrupted LangPack file, the php.ini setting seems to have influence. If I set mbstring.http_output = EUC-JP in /etc/php.ini (that is the default for VineLinux), I will get the corrupted atutor_1_5_ja.zip of 16319 bytes. But when I set mbstring.http_output = pass atutor_1_5_ja.zip is 19680 bytes and OK. Possibly directly or indirectly the charset conversion has some influence. I wonder if you have the same problem in creating backup files ... At least I found the solution is to set mbstring.http_output = pass if you do not have bad effects to other applications on the same server. Posted: 2005-07-21 11:09:47 | ||
