When should your kid really have an IQ test, how would that work and what would the result tell you? We have answers.
Children go through different stages of development at their own pace. When it comes to intelligence, a child rarely resembles another. If a child’s performance is in the average of its peers, parents are often not very concerned about the intelligence of their child. If a child’s performance is above or below average, parents and teachers often think about an IQ test.
MOST school systems and overcrowded classrooms often don’t allow customized learning experiences to children. It is up to the parents to find the talents of their kids and sometimes an IQ test can help finding hidden intelligence.
When should your child have an IQ test?
IQ tests should never be made just for fun. The result will remain in the mind of the parents and of the child and can influence the child’s future. A child’s development often takes place in phases and a reliable IQ test result is only realistic after a certain age. You can find IQ tests for kids online from 6 years old.
Only if teachers and parents think that the child may be more or less gifted than other children of the same age, an IQ test for kids can be useful.
If a child shows great curiosity, extreme thirst for knowledge, quick storage of information, independent linking, is goal-oriented and works very independent you may consider that the child is highly talented.
How does an IQ test for kids work?
General IQ test models test cognitive competencies, such as
- linguistic, which often is a matter of determining synonyms, opposites or analogies,
- the mathematical part, where the candidate gets a series of numbers which have to be completed logically,
- and logical thinking skills.
The tasks of an IQ test from 3 years and older are based on pictures. Different patterns or geometric shapes in three dimensions have to be recognised and assigned.
What does the result tell you
IQ testing is reliable but not a science. The test result shows where a child’s strengths and weaknesses are in relation to its learning abilities but the scores from tests are only estimated based on the child’s performance on that particular day and will change while the child is still developing. The actual score could also be a bit higher or lower but won’t change substantially.
Once the IQ test for children shows a result, parents and teachers should be very sensible with it.
The test result clearly shows where a child’s strengths and weaknesses are in relation to its learning abilities.
Once the parents have the results they should talk to the teacher and find sensible support for their child at school and at home.
We should keep in mind that intelligence is more than IQ. An IQ test provides reliable results but values do not tell us anything about a child’s ability. A child is more than a mathematical score. Social intelligence, empathy or creative creativity are lost on IQ tests for kids.
