Step 3: Creating Your Classroom Wordle Game

When on the Wordle Game Editor page, delete the existing word “WORDS” and enter our 5-letter words in the “Enter a word here..” input field. Then, click on the ADD button to add the word. You can add as many 5-letter words as you like, but only one-by-one.

Once you complete that, the word goes to the table below the input field.

You will find your personal game URL above the word list, which you can share with your students or use to play the game yourself.

To play the game, share the Game URL with players. You can also test that the game works by playing the game yourselves:

Of course, since you know the correct word, you guessed right in one attempt.

Ideas for Playing Your Wordle Game With Students

Fastest Fingers

You can have your students play the Wordle game individually on their phones. Then, the student who guesses the word the fastest wins.

The Closest Letters

For each student, give points for every new green letter on each row of the grid based on the number of new green letters on the row. Then, allot lower points for every new yellow letter on each row. The student who rakes in the highest points at the end of the game wins.

For instance, if a student deduces one green letter in the first row, they could get 5 points. Then, if they guess two new green letters in the second row, they could rake in 6 points for each new letter, taking their total to 17 points.

However, if they’d guessed two green letters in the first row, they would have gotten 6 points for each letter instead of 5. Then, if they’d guessed one green letter in the second row, they would have gotten 5 points for that letter. If they also figure out one new green letter in the third row, they will get 5 points. But if they guess four green letters in the third row, they will get 8 points for each letter.

If they guess a yellow letter at any point, no matter the number of new yellow letters guessed on the row, they could get 2 points for each letter.

In the screenshot below, if we use the point system described in the previous paragraphs, the student gets 36 points.

Playing the game this way means that the students do not necessarily have to guess the word correctly in the end. Also, the student with the highest number of correct letters per row has a higher chance of nicking victory.

The Whole Class

Wordle is a great way to warm the students up for vocabulary-based exercises in class. It could also just be another fun activity. So, you could have the whole class play the game together.
